Over the last year, SBW has been working with the higher education institute, UHOVI. Backed by Welsh Government, UHOVI is part of the University of South Wales.
They work closely with further education colleges and training providers, local authorities, businesses, schools and the voluntary sector to offer a wide range of learning opportunities relevant to the needs of the region. Students can start small with bite-sized courses or they may want to jump straight into a foundation degree or HND.
If you’ve been following us on social media, you may have already seen that we have been busy creating a fully integrated campaign for them; with the core message of accessibility for students, both location wise and financially.
Following our successful design of the UHOVI 2015/16 prospectus, online banners and our colourful hand illustrated print and outdoor poster ad campaign, we were asked to produce a set of films for use online and in the cinema! We were delighted for the chance to add some SBW magic to the film project!
We engaged with Cardiff based film company Rockadove and decided to feature real students, with the films being shot at their local colleges. Three students were selected, all with different reasons for deciding to study with UHOVI instead of moving away from home.
We chose not to use the traditional talking head interview style of film, and instead used pre-prepared scripts which were then added to the film as voiceovers. This allowed us to show the students in lots of different scenarios as well as showing off some of the amazing facilities offered locally at the Colleges where the studying takes place.
Our first video focuses on Anneliese, a student who aims to one day become a teacher, but being a mum of three makes it almost impossible for her to study away from home. With the help of UHOVI, Anneliese has been able to study her degree at her local college, making her dreams of becoming a teacher a reality.

Our second video looked at Bethan, who originally decided to go to university in London. However having decided the big city life wasn’t for her, Bethan moved back to Wales with her confidence knocked. With guidance from UHOVI, Bethan has since been able to pick up her studies right where she left off at a college close to home.

Our final video brought us performing arts student Michael; who went to university when he was younger, but chose the wrong course and as a result didn’t complete his degree. Put off by confusing student loans, Michael put his aspirations of being on the West End to bed. But with the support of UHOVI tutors, Michael also found a course that was perfect for him and already has had parts in a number of productions!
